Return to the Printed Bible: Don’t Let Convenience Steal the Depth of Encountering God
By HuSir
Dear brothers and sisters, friends,
In the past, like many of you, I would open the Bible app on my phone every day — completing reading plans, listening to audio, and looking up verses. Technology has made it incredibly convenient — accessible anytime, anywhere, with one-click searches and instant switching between translations. The Bible has never seemed so within reach.
Yet, when I paused to reflect carefully, I discovered a disturbing truth: the experience of reading the Bible electronically every day is worlds apart from reading a physical, printed Bible.
The electronic version allows us to “read more,” but it often turns into quick scrolling, skimming golden verses, and simply checking off a box. Notification pop-ups, temptations from other apps, and fragmented attention… God’s Word has quietly become just another form of “content consumption.” We might read several chapters in a day, yet struggle to truly meditate, remember the context, or let the verses sink deeply into our hearts.
However, when I occasionally pick up that thick physical Bible, the feeling is completely different:
- No distractions: No phone notifications — only the touch of paper, the sound of turning pages, and quiet, undivided focus.
- Deeper understanding and memory: I can see the entire page layout at a glance and remember “that passage was on the upper right side of the page.” Spatial memory and tactile sensation help me grasp the Bible’s overall narrative better, rather than isolated verses.
- Stronger sense of ritual and reverence: The moment I hold the Bible, it feels like saying to God, “I am now ready to meet with You wholeheartedly.” Underlining with a pen, taking notes, and seeing years of my own markings — it’s like flipping through the history of my conversations with God.
Scientific research has repeatedly confirmed that paper-based reading is generally superior to screen reading in terms of deep comprehension, long-term retention, and sustained focus. Digital reading easily leads to “shallow reading” and “skimming,” while paper reading better helps the brain form neural pathways for deep thinking. This difference is especially pronounced when reading the Bible — a text that requires meditation and reflection.
Interestingly, even though Bible apps (such as YouVersion) have surpassed one billion installs worldwide, sales of physical Bibles are also rising significantly. In 2025, U.S. printed Bible sales reached a 21-year high, with approximately 19 million copies sold — continuing a steady growth trend since 2021. Many people, including younger generations, are rediscovering that technology brings convenience, but it cannot replace that real, immersive, reverent encounter.
Aldous Huxley once said, “Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards.” This statement rings especially true today. God’s Word is meant to shape our lives and renew our minds, not to be consumed and forgotten in the most “efficient” way possible.
I am not suggesting we completely abandon electronic Bibles — they remain extremely valuable for travel, commuting, and quick lookups. But I sincerely appeal to everyone:
Please try restoring the habit of reading a physical Bible!
- Set aside at least one undisturbed period each day to use a printed Bible for devotion, meditation, and copying verses.
- Put your phone in another room and create a quiet space that belongs only to God’s Word.
- Choose a translation you love (such as the Chinese Union Version, NKJV, or others) and let it become your spiritual “old friend.”
When you pick up that physical Bible again, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover: God’s Word is no longer pixels on a screen, but a living, active force that can pierce to the division of soul and spirit and truly transform lives.
The strength of our faith has never depended on how much we read, but on how much we are changed by God’s Word. In this digital age, let us not allow convenience to become an excuse for regression. Instead, let us use tools wisely while holding firmly to that deep, focused, and reverent encounter.
Are you willing to join me in picking up a physical Bible again?
Feel free to share your experiences in the group — your story may encourage many others to return to that ancient yet eternal beauty.
May the Word of God come alive again in our hands and in our hearts.
