One Step Away (4): When You No Longer Worship Lies — The Return from Man to God
(Sequel: From “Native Resources” to the “Inner Foundation”)
By HuSir
In the previous three essays of the “One Step Away” series, we explored resources from traditional Chinese culture — ancestral halls, Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism — seeking modern paths that could speak to our present reality and offer genuine freedom. Yet when we dig deeper, we discover a more fundamental question: Why do these paths so often fail to take root in real life? Why do people clearly see the problems but still remain trapped?
The answer, more often than not, lies not outside us, but deep within the human heart.
In this land shrouded in haze, many people are neither lacking in intelligence nor devoid of conscience. Rather, they have long lived wrapped in layers of grand narratives. They have grown accustomed to looking up to certain individuals, certain systems, and certain “paths to success,” unconsciously elevating them to a nearly unquestionable status.
This is precisely where the problem begins.
When a person places any human being in a position that belongs only to God, they have already stepped into the realm of lies.
No matter where you are, no matter your status, wealth, gender, or age — no one on this planet deserves to be regarded as a god-like figure. Whether it is a powerful leader, a fabulously wealthy tycoon, or a seemingly flawless “success story,” they are all merely fellow human beings: flesh and blood, limited, and frail, just like us. To some extent, this even includes our parents and closest family. We should be grateful for the gift of life and their care, but we must not elevate them to the place that belongs only to God. True freedom begins the moment we stop turning any person into an idol.
I. The Origin of Lies: When Humans Take God’s Place
Lies are not merely false words. At a deeper level, a lie is a misplaced position. When parents are treated as unquestionable authorities, when successful people become the only life template, when power structures are seen as the sole source of order, or when a certain narrative is accepted as ultimate truth — we have quietly given these created things the throne that belongs to the Creator alone.
Once this happens, the consequences cascade. We begin measuring ourselves by other people’s standards, rejecting our own possibilities because they don’t match someone else’s story, and explaining all of reality through existing narratives. Gradually, our judgment weakens, our inner perception grows numb, and even the meaning of “truth” becomes blurred.
This state may feel stable, but it is actually extremely fragile. Some live in constant anxiety and self-doubt, forever trying to prove they are “good enough.” Others swing to the opposite extreme, drawing false confidence from attachment to the system, yet losing their authenticity in the process. In either case, the root issue is the same: we have drifted away from the true Source we were meant to align with.
II. The Foundation of Freedom: Stopping the Worship of People
Many assume freedom comes from changing external circumstances. But the deepest freedom actually begins with a simple inner shift: stopping the habit of looking up to any human being as someone we must worship or depend upon.
Status, wealth, identity, gender, and blood ties can all be part of real-life relationships — but none of them should ever become a reason to kneel in our hearts.
Gratitude for our parents’ upbringing is natural and right. But when family affection is turned into an unquestionable authority or a tool for moral control, the relationship has already been distorted. Respecting others’ experiences is wise. But when “success stories” become the only acceptable path and we begin denying our own calling because of them, we have already lost our way.
A common trap today is constantly switching between different “role models” — imitating one person today, copying another tomorrow — yet never forming a path that truly belongs to ourselves. The problem is not the examples themselves, but our underlying dependence. Only when we stop worshiping any person can we finally face our own unique position and take responsibility for the life God has entrusted to us.
III. Holding onto Truth Within a Culture of Lies
In an environment where information and official narratives are tightly interwoven, lies rarely appear as obvious falsehoods. Instead, they are carefully packaged as “reasonable,” “necessary,” or “for the greater good.” Over time, people adapt to this way of speaking and learn to find safety within it — stopping their questions, dulling their discernment, and avoiding the risk of making their own judgments.
But this adaptation is ultimately a form of surrender. Any structure that relies on constant narrative repair must keep producing new explanations to replace the old ones, redefining “correctness” to cover over previous realities.
In such an environment, staying clear-minded is not easy. Refusing to drift with the current and refusing to treat any “authority” or “official voice” as the final standard requires ongoing vigilance and inner stability. This does not mean opposing everything, but rather maintaining a firm point of reference amid the complexity.
Only when we stop treating human beings as the ultimate authority can we rebuild that solid foundation.
In this hazy land especially, any ruling party that did not come to power through genuine democratic election naturally carries a strong tendency toward deception. They have their own sophisticated ways of lying — sometimes through grand narratives, sometimes through selective silence, sometimes by repackaging failure as victory or slavery as liberation. They excel at drowning individual conscience in the name of “collective interest” and suppressing personal voices in the name of “historical trends.” In such a setting, holding firmly to the heart of Jesus Christ becomes both exceptionally difficult and exceptionally precious.
IV. The Path of Return: From Man Back to God
If “stop worshiping people” is the first step, the next question is: What should we align ourselves with instead?
The answer is both simple and often overlooked — we return to God Himself.
God is not merely a concept added to human stories; He is the very source of all judgment and meaning. When a person truly places God in His rightful place, their measuring stick changes completely: they no longer center their lives on other people’s opinions, but on whether they are faithful to the calling God has placed in their heart. They are no longer controlled by short-term results, but learn to understand their place on a much longer timeline.
This does not make life easier, but it makes a person profoundly steady. We can act amid uncertainty, persevere under pressure, and maintain direction even in seemingly insignificant situations. This is not escaping reality — it is establishing a deeper and truer order within reality itself.
V. A Call: Begin by Rejecting Lies
Sometimes “one step away” is simply a choice: continue in dependence, or begin to stand on your own; keep repeating old patterns, or start discerning truth for yourself.
Rejecting the worship of lies does not mean rejecting everything. It means putting every person, every system, and every story back in its proper place.
I appeal to every person living in this land shrouded in haze:
When facing various “paths to success,” pause and ask — Does this story replace the true Source?
When facing authority and official narratives, keep a measure of discernment — do not accept blindly, nor reject hastily.
In daily life, begin with what is right in front of you — do the present task well, rather than living according to other people’s expectations.
Genuine change rarely starts with massive structural shifts. It begins with the transformation of individuals. When more and more people stop worshiping human beings and return to the true Source, the lies that have long sustained themselves will gradually lose their foundation.
The road ahead remains long, but the direction can be clear.
Stop worshiping people. Fear God alone.
This is not only the starting point of faith — it is also the starting point of true freedom.
A truly fulfilling life begins the moment you stop revering lies. You are already standing at the edge of this one small step.
Take it.
God will be with you. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
