(EN ver. inside)

Return Series No. 4: The Return of Rights — Making Space for Truthful Speech and Allowing Emotions to Be Seen

By HuSir

In an era of rapid material and technological advancement, many people still feel a subtle sense of loss deep inside. It is not that daily necessities are insufficient, but that the right to authentic expression, the right to natural emotions, and the right to faithful recording are often constrained layer by layer under various management requirements. The Constitution explicitly protects rights related to expression and participation, which embody the status of the people as masters of the country. The return of rights does not mean rejecting the existing framework, but rather allowing the spirit of the Constitution to take root more fully in daily life: enabling the people to honestly voice their true feelings, allowing recorders to faithfully reflect human joys and sorrows, and enabling communicators to convey facts without violating their conscience.

Starting from the Authentic Expression of Emotions: Letting Tears and Truth Flow Naturally

People shed tears because they need to release real pain, emotion, or a sense of injustice. Tears are the simplest language of humanity and the most direct response to reality. In many situations, however, openly sharing these emotions requires extra caution.

We have all seen tears shed due to accidents, illness, or life difficulties: the grief of disaster-affected families, the helplessness of patients facing heavy burdens, the pent-up grievances of ordinary people under pressure… These emotions should be seen and understood by society and transformed into motivation for improvement. Yet, some related reports and dissemination are sometimes required to emphasize “positive orientation,” avoid excessive rendering of negative aspects, and instead highlight rescue efforts or expressions of gratitude. As a result, parts of these genuine emotional experiences remain more in the private sphere, while the public often sees only carefully screened positive images.

This is not merely “emotional guidance”; it concerns the integrity of human dignity and social feedback. Creating more space for natural emotional expression — allowing people to honestly share sorrow and appeals in the public domain rather than being constantly compelled to smile — is an important step toward society’s self-repair. Only when real emotions and stories are seen can problems be understood more comprehensively, and society can gradually improve through feedback. Suppressing genuine emotions may narrow the channels for reflection; allowing tears and stories to flow more freely helps build greater social resilience.

The Reality of Expression and the Spirit of the Constitution

The freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution must, in practice, balance multiple considerations, including the maintenance of public order, social stability, and positive guidance. These considerations have formed multi-layered norms and feedback mechanisms for expression, aimed at fostering a healthy information environment.

  • Traditional Media and the Role of Journalists: In the past, investigative reporting played a positive role in areas such as food safety and medical issues, driving social progress. Today, many frontline journalists must focus on unified tone, highlight positive aspects, and avoid unnecessary hype in their reporting. Disaster coverage often emphasizes rescue outcomes, while sensitive topics require multi-party coordination. This has led some journalists to feel a shift from “first-line recorders” to “positive communicators,” with their professional space somewhat squeezed. How to preserve more room for truthful recording while ensuring accuracy has become a shared challenge for the industry.
  • The Ecosystem of Self-Media: Self-media was originally a supplementary channel for ordinary people to share experiences and express views, bringing diverse perspectives. In recent years, special governance campaigns targeting false information, bottomless traffic-seeking, and negative hype have increased. As a result, many creators who touch on hot topics or offer genuine critiques may face traffic adjustments or content handling. Consequently, some spend considerable energy studying expression boundaries or opting for safer ways to express themselves. The time originally devoted to sincerely sharing personal experiences is sometimes consumed in compliance negotiations. This makes “speaking the truth” require more wisdom in certain contexts.

The starting point of these management mechanisms is often the overall stability and health of information. However, they may also lead to incomplete information and affect public trust. This is consistent with the themes of the previous three articles in the series — the return of truthful language, safe food, and fair healthcare: only when the underlying logic places greater emphasis on truth and balance can surface-level progress truly translate into tangible benefits for the people.

Constructive Paths for the Return of Rights: Starting from Micro-Level Implementation

Better realization of rights requires making the spirit of the Constitution more operational in specific practices. The focus is not on overturning the existing system, but on micro-level improvement and balance:

  1. Transparency in Review and Regulation: Further clarify the legal basis for boundaries of expression, so that journalists and creators have more predictable rules and reduced broad uncertainty.
  2. Protection of Truthful Recording and Sharing: Encourage valuable social investigative reporting and reasonably safeguard space for interviews and expression. Provide greater protection for citizens’ personal accounts and the authentic content of self-media, rather than simple labeling. Only when real voices are heard can the stories behind emotions be transformed into constructive momentum.
  3. Rebuilding an Environment of Mutual Trust: Platforms and management bodies can prioritize support for information transparency and healthy discussion. While maintaining order, they should avoid blanket suppression of differing voices. The public can also start from small places: in family settings and friend circles, share more genuine observations and use fewer empty phrases (as advocated in the first article). As more people become accustomed to honest expression, the necessity of management will naturally adjust accordingly.
  4. Return of Journalism and Self-Media to Their Original Aspirations: Journalists can gradually return to their core roles of supervision and recording, rather than serving merely as mouthpieces. Self-media should return to the starting point of “speaking truthfully without violating conscience” and not sacrifice truth for traffic. Only when diverse and responsible voices coexist can society achieve stronger consensus and resilience through self-correction.

Conclusion: Truth Is the Starting Point for the Return of Rights

The Return Series began with the truthfulness of language (only by speaking truthfully can we truly reflect), then moved to food (eating with peace of mind, without violating conscience), then to health (equal access to medical care, without losing life due to medical costs). Now it reaches rights — the core that runs throughout remains truth. Creating space for emotional expression and reasonable channels for truthful speech is not an abstract slogan, but a daily tool for people to feel dignity and promote social improvement.

What ordinary people can do starts today: within our capabilities, speak genuine observations, record real stories, and support responsible voices. No grand actions are needed — only daily persistence. Just like the child in The Emperor’s New Clothes, a simple truthful statement can bring clarity. The improvement of these spaces also depends on everyone’s everyday truthful expression and perseverance.

Move forward rationally, with clarity in mind. You are welcome to share your genuine feelings and constructive ideas in the comments or through private exchanges — this itself is a small step in the return of rights.

Series Preview: The next may cover the return of education, the return of trust, or other areas worthy of attention. The views in this article are based on publicly available information and personal observations, aimed at objective reflection and joint discussion rather than creating opposition. Rational discussion is welcome as we seek more balanced paths of return.
