(EN ver. inside)

How Can I Understand Walking with God?

——Dispel Misconceptions, Live Out the Truth

By HuSir

In many churches, walking with God is depicted as an unfathomable spiritual state, as though only a handful of “extraordinary” people can attain it. Some pastors heighten its mystery with miracles and ornate rhetoric; others simplify it into religious rituals; still others leave their teaching as hollow theory on paper. These misunderstandings leave believers confused: What exactly is walking with God? How can we practice it in daily life? Based on Scripture, this article clears the fog, explains the true meaning of walking with God from my own understanding, and helps brothers and sisters live out an intimate relationship with God in everyday life.

I. Misconceptions—What Walking with God Is Not

1. Not a Mystical Experience or Supernatural Event

Some teachings claim that walking with God must be accompanied by visions, dreams, or miracles, as though one is not spiritual without them. Scripture never defines walking with God as pursuing supernatural experiences. Enoch “walked with God” (Genesis 5:24), and Scripture describes his lifelong faithfulness and obedience, not frequent miracles. Jesus also warned that true faith is not founded on “signs and wonders,” but on obeying God’s will (Matthew 7:21-23). Over-pursuing mystical experiences may cause people to neglect daily obedience or be deceived by Satan’s disguises (2 Corinthians 11:14). This not only makes believers feel spiritual “failure” but may also deviate from God’s intent.

And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
—Genesis 5:24 NKJV

Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
—Matthew 7:21-23 NKJV

And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
—2 Corinthians 11:14 NKJV

2. Not a Heap of Religious Forms

Others believe walking with God is simply going to more meetings, reading more Bible, and praying more, as if one’s spiritual life can be measured by the quantity of rituals. Yet Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for focusing on external rules while neglecting inner justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23). Micah 6:8 clearly states:

“He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?”
—Micah 6:8 NKJV

If religious activity lacks inward obedience, it traps people in legalism and robs them of genuine fellowship with God.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
—Matthew 23:23 NKJV

3. Not Hollow Theory on Paper

Some pastors use lofty terms or abstract theology to explain walking with God yet give no practical guidance, leaving believers helpless. James 2:17 reminds us, “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (NKJV). Likewise, if walking with God remains theoretical, it loses vitality. Scripture always links walking with God to concrete life practice—David trusted God’s presence even in the shadow of death (Psalm 23:4). Empty teaching disconnects faith from life, making believers unable to rely on God when trials come.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

—Psalm 23:4 NKJV

II. Walking with God in Scripture—Its True Meaning

Walking with God is believers establishing an intimate relationship with God in everyday life, relying on His guidance, obeying His will, and living out His justice and love. Consider familiar Chinese idioms—“聚精会神(jù jīng huì shén, concentrate fully),全神贯注(quán shén guàn zhù, focus all ones mind),凝神聚力(níng shén jù lì, gather ones strength)”. Literally, they describe someone working with full attention; spiritually, they echo Scripture’s call to devote our whole mind to what we are doing, avoiding distraction or divided focus.

Whatever a person is experiencing is God’s opportunity for them to act. We must not casually scatter our thoughts, delaying the present task, nor let desires and worries divert our emotions. Treating the present seriously is the best way to respond to God’s leading—this is the beautiful moment of walking with God.

Scripture offers clear models—here are several Old-Testament examples:

  1. Enoch walked with God through lifelong faithfulness and obedience. Scripture records few miracles but highlights his continuous intimacy with God.
  2. Noah lived in a corrupt age, yet trusted God and obeyed His command, building the ark. His obedience rescued his family and became part of God’s redemptive plan.
  3. Abraham, the “father of faith,” obeyed God’s call and was willing to offer Isaac (Genesis 22). His life shows that walking with God means trusting God’s promises amid unknowns and trials.
  4. Jacob once relied on his own schemes, but God’s encounters at Bethel (Genesis 28:10-22) and Peniel (Genesis 32:24-30) taught him surrender. His wrestling reminds us that walking with God involves yielding self to God’s shaping.

These examples reveal key points of walking with God:

  • Trust God’s promises like Abraham (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • Obey faithfully like Noah (John 14:15).
  • Maintain intimacy with God through prayer and Scripture (Psalm 119:105).
  • Constantly resist Satan’s distractions, focusing on God’s tasks and rejecting “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16).
  • In relationships, live out God’s love and serve others (Matthew 22:37-39).

For instance, when facing unfair competition, believers choose honesty and prayer rather than retaliation; in parenting, they rely on God’s wisdom, responding in love and patience rather than anger; in illness or hardship, they keep trusting God, resisting Satan’s fear and despair.

III. Practising Walking with God in Daily Life

  1. Return to Scripture, Root in Truth
Spend time daily reading and meditating on God’s Word (Psalm 1:2). Psalm 23 reminds us of God’s presence; John 15:4-5 teaches abiding; Philippians 4:6-7 encourages peace through prayer. Let Scripture guide and shape your thoughts and actions.
  2. Exercise Prayer, Stay Alert in Battle
Satan often distracts us through temptations and worldly noise (Ephesians 6:12). Establish regular prayer times, asking for discernment and strength. When scattered, pause for brief confession and help: “Lord, help me resist Satan’s lies and focus on You.”
  3. Live Out Justice and Mercy
Walking with God is action, not talk. Love the needy, forgive offenders, and act honestly (Micah 6:8). Even driving attentively—observing surrounding vehicles—embodies walking with God.
  4. Build Fellowship, Encourage One Another
Share experiences and pray together (Hebrews 10:24-25). A small Bible-study group helps believers withstand Satan’s attacks.
  5. Practise Discernment, Keep from Worldliness
Information overload may draw hearts from God. Distinguish helpful content, reduce aimless entertainment. Set device-free times for prayer or Bible-reading, letting God’s Word counter worldly thinking (Romans 12:2).

Conclusion: A Call and Encouragement

Walking with God is neither an unreachable mystical thrill nor an empty ritual; it is trusting, obeying, and engaging in intimate fellowship with Him daily. Through Enoch’s faithfulness, Noah’s uprightness, Abraham’s faith, and Jacob’s surrender, we see that every believer is called to walk with God. Today, let us repent of stray thoughts, resist Satan’s distractions, and boldly walk with God in life.

Abide in Me, and I in you. … For without Me you can do nothing.
—John 15:4-5 NKJV

May we, by God’s grace, live out the true life of walking with Him every day!
