(EN ver. inside)

How to Remain Holy in the Information Flood of the 21st Century

— A Spiritual Call to Mainland Chinese Christians

By HuSir

In mainland China — right here, right now — the information environment is tightly steered. Short‑video apps, WeChat public accounts, and Douyin* are saturated with entertainment and state‑approved ideology. All channels of opinion are molded toward a highly homogenized mind‑set. Authorities strive for ideological unity: even the promotion of “successful” private‑sector corporate culture is restricted, while internet giants that can sway public sentiment (WeChat, Weibo, Douyin) are treated leniently, their short‑video businesses drawn into the grand project of uniform thought. The double standard is obvious.

Whether ordinary citizens, committed Communists, or Christians, we all receive essentially the same daily feed: materialism, hedonism, and official narratives dominate our screens. Inside this vast “intranet,” no one can hide. Christians long to be set apart, yet our old nature (“the flesh”) so often drags us into the same current.

Scripture commands, “Do not be conformed to this world” (Romans 12:2, NKJV). But becoming holy in such an environment is unimaginably hard. Every believer — new convert, ministry worker, youth, parent, or elder — faces a spiritual battle. No wonder, more than 2 000 years ago, John the Baptist cried under Roman oppression, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:2, NKJV). In the face of information control and ideological pressure, repentant prayer and critical thinking are our God‑given weapons to guard the faith and protect the next generation.

1  Spiritual Struggle under Information Control

Picture this: during down‑time you scroll Douyin, short videos, ads—soon an hour is gone, crowding out reflection and Scripture reading. Even when you keep a “quiet time,” your mind drifts. Or in WeChat groups, mainstream opinions press you to conform just to avoid conflict.

The push for ideological unity is plain—private enterprises that do not echo the official line are curbed, while “micro‑” and “dou‑” giants are spared because their platforms monitor speech and shape opinion for profit. These feeds are like opium: custom algorithms reinforce secular values—“success = wealth,” “happiness = pleasure.”

Christians face not only the proclaimed 5 000‑year cultural pressure but also the “minority” status of the faith. In the workplace we “go with the flow,” at home we meet worldly expectations; our children absorb a single ideology at school. Youth drown in short‑video torrents, parents worry about passing on faith versus tradition, elders are bewildered by social change. How can we live holy lives under such manipulation?

2  Prayer of Repentance: Returning to God for Ourselves and Our Children

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

—Psalm 51:10, NKJV

In an environment of information control our minds drift: Douyin’s amusement, WeChat’s narrative. Yet repentance is the starting point of renewal—not only for us but for the next generation. It cuts through distraction and compromise, choosing to let God rule our thoughts and households.

Simple Steps

  1. Daily Examination — Take two or three five‑minute pauses: “Was I manipulated today? Did my choices influence my child?”
  2. Sincere Confession — Pray: “Lord, I repent for ignoring You and following the world. Cleanse me, keep my children.”
  3. Family Devotion — Spend ten minutes reading and praying with children, even in secret.

A young couple noticed their child mimicking harmful Douyin trends. They began dawn prayers of repentance and Bible reading with the child. In time the parents regained spiritual vitality, and a seed of faith was planted in the youngster’s heart.

3  Critical Thinking: Guarding Ourselves and Our Offspring with Truth

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God.
—1 John 4:1, NKJV

The “micro‑” and “dou‑” feeds look “pleasant to the eyes… desirable to make one wise” (cf. Genesis 3:6), yet often serve ideological uniformity. Critical thinking is our shield, helping us and our children discern truth and resist mental opiates.

Practical Tools for Any Age

  1. Truth Filter — Each time you scroll, ask: “Does this align with Scripture?” (Philippians 4:8).
  2. Intentional Choice — Seek spiritual content through safe channels; teach children discernment.
  3. Prayer for Wisdom — “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…” (James 1:5).
  4. Family Dialogue — Discuss news with kids; guide them to respond by faith, rejecting unhealthy trends.

Critical thinking simply means analyzing and questioning information to form independent, God‑honoring judgments. Under a system of ideological uniformity, this way of thinking is not welcome and may even be suppressed, as can be seen in the review of speech. Within the system, this way of thinking is often drowned out by the majority opinion. However, brothers and sisters, do not lose heart because of this, gradually becoming entangled in it and losing your spiritual direction.

4  Set Apart: From Struggle to Legacy

I do not pray that You should take them out of the world,
but that You should keep them from the evil one…
Sanctify them by Your truth.

—John 17:15‑17, NKJV

God calls us to live holy lives amid control. Repentance turns us from the web toward God; critical thinking defends us and our descendants with truth. In China’s special context, the way is hard, yet it is the long‑term path of grace—and it fulfils the promise: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8, NKJV)

5  Action: Start Today

Shut Douyin for five minutes. Pray: “Lord, cleanse me, guard my children.” Before each swipe ask, “Does this glorify God?” Share your struggles with family; build a hidden yet living legacy of faith. God’s grace will keep you—so you can live holy in the flood of information.

Brothers and sisters, brief leisure is fine, but even more we need God’s grace to sustain both body and soul—and to make them abound. Let us pray for this.

* Douyin is the mainland Chinese version of TikTok.

* The system generally refers to government or enterprise units under the leadership of the Communist Party of China on the mainland.
